DREAMers
Last year a young group got together in the city to organise "a fundraising function" for Youth Off The Streets... All were volunteers, enthusiastic but not professional "event" people. DREAM stands for Donating Resources, Energy And Motivation - and the Dreamers are avid supporters of Youth Off The Streets.
Despite (or perhaps because of) this lack of experience, this group produced an extraordinary and unique event, from first meeting to close of tills in an amazing 3 months, and it has become an annual event. This was a Celebrity Art Auction like no other: a group of about 25 high-profile Australians were gathered at a studio called Artescape to create some really amazing pieces. In this studio, there are big spaces, disposable space suits, no paintbrushes… and no rules!
The resulting artworks were quite amazing. Some people not usually associated with the art world showed us we’d underestimated their talents. Some, like the Youth Off The Streets residents who joined them, just embraced (and liberated, covered with paint) their ‘inner child’.
The artworks were then auctioned off at a very groovy event hosted at celebrity salon Gibara in Darlinghurst. Numerous musicians, including Aya Larkin (ex Skunkhour) and Peta Morris (paulmac) entertained, fabulous food (donated and created by Simmone Logue Fine Food) and wines were consumed, and some very significant dollars were raised, with all going to Youth Off The Streets.
That was last year....
2003 will see the 2nd Annual Youth Off The Streets Artescape Celebrity Art Auction. Tentative dates are May 14th for the Creation Night and June 25th for the Auction. It will be bigger than Ben Hur - and fun not to be missed!
