ROVE CHATS TO RAMON TICKERUM (ROVE 1999)

ROVE : It's time to introduce our first guest for this evening. Most people will recognise him from his work on the BBC Tv series, "This Life". He is currently in town filming "Waiting at the Royal"...will you please welcome Ramon Tickerum...Look at you...

Ramon : Very high up there, it's good

ROVE : It's a comfy chair isn't it ?

Ramon : It's a comfy chair...it's comfier than that couch

ROVE : I don't know about you, don't want to sit in the front row of the audience...I tell you that much. Now, I just have to say, right off the top, and I wouldn't just say this to any guest at all - that's the best darn shirt I've ever seen...

Ramon : Wel, it is, just been resurrected fro being pyjamas incidently...

ROVE : Let me guess...is it...has it come from Hugo Boss, possibly Boulevard ?

Ramon : No, it's come from Brunswick Street. I've got into Melbourne Retro since I've been here...it's a great fashion that isn't current in London.

ROVE : Good to see paisley coming back - fantastic ! Now, you actually are in town here for "Waiting at the Royal"...

Ramon: Yeah, it's a tv movie for Channel Nine...next year it's going to be screened...It's a story of four women...you didn't even ask me this, I'm just telling you...one of them is Catherine Mc Clements...

ROVE : Oh, Catherine Mc Clements...is...I thought she died ! Water Rats - I saw her !

Ramon: She died, then she came back to be my wife...well, I'm to be her husband...

ROVE: Cool ! do you get to kiss her...on the mouth !!!

Ramon : I get to kiss her everywhere !

ROVE : Yes ! ...well done...congratulations...

Ramon : Thankyou...

ROVE : Most people probably know you for your work on "This Life"...though for those of us who aren't aware of the series, you played a...

Ramon : Well, he was confused...well he wasn't confused about his career, he was a gay biker on beer, that's what he was yeah...

ROVE : And Ferdy (?) the character was extremely popular and he's probably best known for the fact that he did some very controversial scenes...

Ramon : I did...I did possibly the most explicit gay scenes on British tv at the time, but now everybodys jumped on the bandwagon !

ROVE: Oh gawd, there's a (sorry I couldn't read whatever I wrote what ROVE said here so this wont make any sense at all I'll fix it one day...) of theme all over the place...

Ramon : Yeah, exactly, but um yeah, I'm famous for taking my clothes off with men...you could do worse...

ROVE: This following scene is from the series "This Life" (yeah they show a clip..)...........Other than this, you've done...this is what I found most fascinating, you were actually Judas in "Jesus Christ Superstar"...

Ramon : I was Judas in "Jesus Christ Superstar"...

ROVE : Now, there was an incident that I found incredibly amusing where you once fell asleep before a performance...what was going on ?

Ramon: I did...I fell asleep...it was a particularly hectic time...I slept in till about 10 o'clock and the company managers' knocking on the door saying, you know the shows been and fone and you know there's 2000 people out there going mad...so I never did it again...but, what was more embarassing than that...

ROVE: No, no, no...before we move on, I have to pull you up there...so they did the show without you?

Ramon : They did the show without me, yes...

ROVE : What happened ?

Ramon : They have covers...it ws a great opportunity for other actors that...

ROVE : You were giving...how did you fall asleep...was it a hard night, the night before...a sleeping in in the morning thing and next thing you know, it's 1000 at night...

Ramon : Well, yeah...I mean, those were days of excess that you know that I have very feint rememberances of...something thats' not part of my life anymore...I'm going mellow now...

ROVE : awwww...you're crusin"...

Ramon : Yeah...

ROVE : So what was the embarassing bit of all that ?

Ramon : The more embarassing moment that that, I didn't tell you before was that in between songs...there was a song "I don't know how to love him" - Mary sang that...I'd go upstairs, go for a piss and...um just getting in on the swear thing...

ROVE : Is that part of the actual musical ?

Ramon : No, no...I just washed my hands...it went all over my trousers...I put on a new pair of trousers, ut the belt on and of course, raced downstairs, walked on to stage and the belt wasn't holding up cause I put it on the wrong way round...I proceeded to do the whole show like this (holding hands on belt)...and eventually there's those moments when you have to go "Jesus Christ...."(extending hands high in the air above head)...and it all fell down...

ROVE : Everyone's going, "Ramones' going nude again ! Well that was a nice little foray into the world of musicals...

Ramon : Yes, it was...

ROVE : Did you enjoy doing plays all that much? Live work compared to tv...

Ramon : Live work's very exciting, but you do have to be disciplined...you have to turn up at the same time everyday you know...

ROVE : Or, you can just sleep in and go "Bugger it !"

Ramon : Yeah, could do...

ROVE: You're very good at that because you're very good at accents aren't you?

Ramon : Yes, I do accents, thats my foray...I grew up in the army, in the British Army when you have accents from all over the country and all over the world...so there is no kind of fixed accent, so you deal with everyone elses accent...

ROVE : Cause Pete is very good at the French accent are'nt you Pete ?

Pete : Well, I can't speak in a French accent, I can laugh in a French accent...

ROVE : He's been trained...

Ramon : You can tell...

ROVE : ...and he woke up which is great for the show...despite all you've done, why is it that you do is pushing the envelope...or you don't take I would suggest the normal track...like you've been in Karma Sutra, which I guess is a confronting film in some sense...

Ramon : Well it was, certainly for India...

ROVE : But for all you are willing to do, you will not cut your hair...

Ramon : I...I'd love to cut my hair...my dream is to go to the (.....?.....) monestry in China to shave my head...that's my next big ambition, but the work keeps coming in...people keep saying, "Don't cut the hair...don't lose the hair..." and um, it will fall out by itself anyway, eventually...

ROVE : Are you actually concerned about that even happening...what would happen if you woke up and the hair...

Ramon : Well, it's starting to grey, I'm not saying it's distinguished...but...

ROVE : Give us a look...where's it going grey ? Aw no, that's a very cool George Negus journo thing you've got going on...So are you enjoying your stay here? ...and lets be honest here...I tell you right now every celebrity that comes to this town...they get asked , "Hey what do you think of Oz ?"...and they're all..."Oh, it's the greatest country I've ever been to"Oh I love Australia, it's my home away from home..." ...don't bullcrap me around...

Ramon : I come from a city which is completely filled with people where you can't see the sky, so suddenly I'm flying to a country where there's space, there's sky, there's beach that you can actually sit on...you know...there's this big change for me, and it's gorgeous...and that retro look...it suits me well...I'm in my element...I'm loving it...it's unreal...

ROVE : As long as you keep wearing shirts like that, you'll be fine...my friend, make no doubt about it...and for those of you of course who are interested, "This Life" will be on Arena, I think on Foxtel n the new year, but in the meantime, will you please thank Ramon Tickerum...
