    Rocky Comedy - 01/10/07

Rockhampton comedy fanatic, Alys McDonough is so passionate about comedy that she is staging her first comedy event right out of her own pocket!

The event is, "Rocky Comedy" and will be held at The Pilbeam Theatre on Saturday, 17th November.

The night will feature four of Australia's hottest comedians - Jimbo, Brendan Lovechild, Geraldine Hickey, and Davo - who are travelling from all over Australia to be a part of the show.

Alys has set herself the ultimate goal - to fill all 971 seats at Rockhampton's Pilbeam Theatre, and she has been putting 150% effort into achieving her goal!

She has been talking up the gig to anyone who will listen, madly handing out flyers - and you may have even seen her roaming the streets armed with her Rocky Comedy Posters as well as a steady supply of enthusiasm and blu-tac!

Alys has already been busy making friends with locals and comedians worldwide on her Myspace Rocky Comedy Site (http://www.myspace.com/rockycomedy), where the friend count of 1100 friends is rising steadily daily! Videos of each performer can be viewed from the site - to give punters a laugh, as well as good idea of what to expect at the first ever Rocky Comedy event.

A press campaign is also on the way, which will span all forms of media - tv, radio, internet and newspapers!

Alys sees this event as the start of an exciting comedy scene in Rockhampton, with plenty of other comedy related events planned in the future.

Possible future Rocky Comedy events include: open mic nights, comedy workshops, and also bringing comedy festival shows to Rockhampton. A "Rocky Comedy Roadtrip" to nearby regional areas is even on the cards!

With the support of the community, this event can be a roaring success, with plenty more exciting comedy events to follow!

Brendan Lovechild stands up for Rove! - 04/10/07

Rocky Comedy featured comedian, Brendan Lovechild already has an impressive string of credits to his name.

He has worked with some of the very best, including Akmal Saleh, Arj Barker, Greg Fleet, Steddy Eddy, Wil Anderson, Puppetry Of The Penis & loads more! His stand up work has been aired nationally on JJJ radio and his cartoons have appeared in multiple publications nationwide.

This week, Brendan was featured on myspace.com as a feature in the comedy videos section. He's one of the only two Aussie comics currently featured, amongst a plethora of international acts. These videos are specially selected by the myspace.com video editors out of literally billions of videos that get uploaded to the worldwide site daily.

In the coming weeks, Brendan will have the opportunity to add yet another impressive notation to his resume - to perform as the featured comedian on this years final episode of Rove!

On Tuesday next week, in a national "invite only" contest, entitled "Snickers Golden Nut Award", Brendan will be filmed by the Rove crew doing what he does best - making people laugh!

Footage of three finalists from each state will then be on the rove.com.au website. The best will get the coveted final stand-up spot on Rove!

Brendan is most certainly going places, so be sure to catch him at Rocky Comedy at The Pilbeam Theatre on the 17th of November so that you can say, "I saw him before he was famous!!!"

    Rocky Comedy - 05/11/07

With just under two weeks to go until Rocky Comedy, the excitement is building, and all my comics are keen to talk!

To organise an interview, feel free to contact Alys at epodcentral1@bigpond.com.

Perhaps you want to talk to Jimbo about his travels around Australia? In particular, what happens when one is asleep in their car and forgets to put the handbrake on? Or maybe talk about Jimbos' vast array of past gigs - everything from nursing homes, kindergartens, prisons, tv - right up to the roughest pubs in Australia!!!

    For more information, http://www.jimbo.com.au

Or maybe you want to talk to Brendan Lovechild about being featured on Myspace, not once but TWICE in the last month? Or how he got his stage name (not even I know, and even I'm curious!) Or his most unusual gig (an example would be when he dressed as a priest and manned a confession booth!) Or maybe talk about his fabulous cartoons?

    For more information, http://www.brendanlovechild.com

Both Brendan and Jimbo are also set to feature on Stand Up Australia (Foxtel) this month, which will then air in December. My other comics Davo and Geraldine have already done their time on Stand-Up Australia, as well as other tv and radio shows!

About Rocky Comedy Blurb: This was the blurb (below) on The Pilbeam Theatres website, where people could buy tickets online. The blurbs were also up on the Rocky Comedy myspace along with the above videos.

Rocky Comedy presents four of Australias hottest comedians - Brendan Lovechild, Davo, Geraldine Hickey, and Jimbo!

Jimbo - In the last fifteen years, Jimbo has performed at over 4000 gigs throughout the world. Jimbo has no fixed address and travels all around Australia in his car which now has considerably more dents in it since when he started his comedy adventures. For more information, check out http://www.jimbo.com.au

Brendan Lovechild - is a mega talented cartoonist and amazing standup comedian. He was reported in Rockhamptons' Morning Bulletin as being "a highlight" of the recent Yeppoon Village Festival. For more information, check out http://www.brendanlovechild.com

Geraldine Hickey - Her first ever stand-up performance led to a special commendation in the 2001 Raw Comedy National finals. Since then she has gone on to perform in some of Australia's best venues with some of the finest comedians in the world. Many of whom have commended her on her fresh and natural approach to stand-up. Laid back and acutely self-deprecating, she is the specialist of poker-faced hilarity. For more information, check out http://www.myspace.com/geraldinehickey

Davo - Davo won the grand prize of $10,000 on Channel Nine's nationally televised 'So you want to be a comedian?' show. Since then, he's been on tv, radio, and just recently appeared in NBC's "Last Comic Standing". For more information, check out http://www.myspace.com/cubanpeteandtheduke

Archive 2 - Comedy workshop & open mic with Mandy Nolan.

This page is an archive of all the promotional material/photos etc from my second Rocky Comedy event on Friday, 25th January, 2008.

Rockhampton Morning Bulletin - Front page of BEAT 03/01/08 - Wanted: Funny Larrikins, by Melinda Siegmeier.

Are you that larrikin who's often heard cracking jokes to friends? Then why not take what you've got to the big stage?

Rocky Comedy is giving local comedians a chance to show Rockhampton what they've got at their next event - an open mic night.

With special guest MC, comedy goddess Mandy Nolan, holding a free comedy workshop prior to the gig, you're sure to have the confidence to shout your jokes out loud.

Mandy will run potential comics through the basics of how to turn your everyday life experiences into a stand-up routine.

This workshop is for beginner comics who want to connect up with others and get some tips on how to get the most of their stage time. You don't have to commit to perform to do the workshop - this is perfect for anyone who just wants to give it a go without the pressure of performance.

The best stand up is not downloaded from the internet or found in a Google search. It's found in a real live human: you!

If you do attend the workshop, you are learning from the best. One of Mandy's past students, Hannah Gadsby, went on to be the winner of Raw Comedy, whilst three others have proceeded to the Raw Comedy finals!

Mandy has performed as a stand-up comedian for 18 years. As well as being a much sought after MC/comic/workshop facilitator, she has appeared on television and radio numerous times.

She is also a talented artist, who has held over 10 successful exhibitions. If all that wasn't enough, Mandy is also a mother of three, and a promoter who runs various comedy rooms, as well as The Bangalow Big Joke Festival.

The workshop will be held at 6pm on January 25th at the Walter Reid Cultural Centre and it's free but bookings are essential. The open mic night will be held after the workshop at 8pm and costs $10.

Below: Mandy Nolan Video as featured on myspace and website.

This is one of my favourite Mandy videos. It's footage of her at her comedy night called, "The Virgin Sacrifice" (it got it's name as it is where her stand-up students perform their first gig onstage in front of an adoring audience!). This was filmed the day that Australia recieved our first Tsunami warning, hence the content.

Below: Mandy Nolan radio series, "The First Stand".

Have a listen to "First Stand". This radio series covers the journey of 14 stand-up novices, as Mandy Nolan teaches them the art of comedy. For more about Mandy, click here to view her official site.
