Simon Day - Ratcat - personal file

Name : Simon Day. I’m not giving away my middle name I’m afraid. Why? Oh, because it’s dumb and if I tell you, I know you’ll print it.

Born : 6 June, 1966 in Crown Street Women’s Hospital, Sydney.

Nicknames : I’ve had plenty! My brother used to call me Glug, and obviously I get Simo, Andrew (Ratcat’s drummer) calls me Simmer (Andrew adds to the list…) Phallic Day. No! That is not a nickname.

Parents : My parents’ names are Bruce and Annabel. My father’s retired, but he has a lot of hobbies. He makes model boats, carves owls and breeds finches. My mother’s into painting and quilting and stuff like that. We’re quite an artistic family. My father used to work in computers.

Siblings : I have an older brother and a younger sister. My sister, Katie, is travelling through Europe at the moment. Nicholas, my brother, lives in Canberra and works for IBM.

Lives : At the moment I live in Mosman with my parents, but I’m moving out in a few weeks. I’ve lived out of home a lot before anyway.

What does your bedroom look like?

I’ve got lots of posters on the walls. There’s a Warhol print of Marilyn Monroe. I’ve got a Dave Stevens print of the first edition of The Destruction of the Innocent which is a comic book and a Salvador Dali (Spanish surrealist painter) print. It’s a picture of a nude lady in the water with her arms out and there are these boat sails. She’s sort of combined with the boat. I also have lots of horror books, I read a lot of books by Clive Barker and Stephen King. I have a lot of comics : Japanese titles, American independents and Batman comics. I have a TV in my room, that’s essential. I don’t have a stereo but I have a little computer. It’s a Mac so I can do design work on it and I have a sampler to make music on. The rooms totally cluttered.

Do you put your clothes away neatly after you’ve taken them off?

No, I chuck ‘em on the floor or pile them on the chair. Kind of like the messy kid syndrome.

Who’s the girl on the “That Ain’t Bad” video?

Her name’s Naomi Watts (currently starring in Home and Away). I went to school with her brother. She’s in that ad, the one where they say “You’ve won a dinner date with Tom Cruise”.

Who are the three most beautiful women in the world?

Mary-Anne Stewart, Michelle Pfeiffer and…oh dear, who else is pretty cute…Elvira. (Mary-Anne Stewart happens to be Simon’s girlfriend.)

What’s your favourite piece of clothing?

I suppose it’s my blue jeans at the moment, they’re what I wear the most.

What’s the most embarrassing thing you’ve worn?

I try not to wear embarrassing things. I suppose my stripy pyjamas, but I love my stripy pyjamas.

Why did you get your locks chopped off?

Oh, just for a change. I felt like it. It’ll grow back. I sorta wanted to cut all the dye out of it. Get it back to it’s natural colour ‘cause I’ve had dyed hair for about the last eight years. It’s pretty dark anyway. I had it cut after I did a Phillips commercial. My long hair had been immortalised twice, in the “That Ain’t Bad” video clip and the commercial, so I decided to get it cut. It was getting a bit hard to look after all the time anyway, when it’s short it’s really easy.

Can you give our readers three hair care beauty tips?

Crimp it till it’s so dry it stands up by itself. That used to be one of my favourite hairdos when I was about 16. Good and spikey. Spikey hair was a must. Let’s see, beauty tips is just what you’re comfortable with. There’s no point in having a hair cut you don’t like, you may as well be comfortable…or wear a hat.

Have you been on telly before now?

I’ve been on telly plenty of times actually. When I was young, about 12 or 13, I won a paper aeroplane flying contest and I was on the Steve Raymond Show. It was kind of like a midday show; the audience was full of older people. I flew my plane and it crashed haha! That was quite good. I also won a helicopter ride with Dick Smith. I did another commercial when I was 16. It was for R&J Fisherman’s Seafood Sauce or something. It was terrible. I wouldn’t do it again. If I’m going to be in the public eye, I’d rather be doing something that takes a bit of talent rather than just being a bit of meat on a commercial. Ratcat were on A Country Practice too. We were the backing band for the story which included a singer of a band who was on heroin. It was on television about a year ago.

Is Matt Day any relation to you?

Yeah, he’s my long lost cousin from Wandin Valley haha!

But he did play with Ratcat the other night, didn’t he?

Yeah, he played bass. We kind of made friends through A Country Practice really. Andrew hangs out with him a bit. He’s a great guy.

Do you think you’re shy>

When I don’t know someone I am I suppose. But when I get to know them, I think people think I’m not very shy at all. They think I’m quite extroverted.

How much money will you have to make before you’ll drive around in a limousine?

Hmmm, a lot more than I’m making now I can tell you. We’re not making much at all! When we make millions I would, but I don’t see that happening for the next three or four years.

But you would ride around in one?

It would depend on the circumstances. Like inbetween shos I would, but not everyday.

When was the last time you went to a dance party?

It was the Batfun party. Actually I shot a documentary with a friend. I did all the camera work. It was one fo the most bizarre things I’ve ever seen. Have I been to a dance party to dance? No, but I did dance that night.

What television show do you always make sure you’re home to watch?

I don’t get much time to watch TV, but Twin Peaks is pretty groovy. I usually video it if I’m not going to be home to watch it.

Did you want to be a fireman when you were a nipper?

No, I wanted to be an astronaut. Well I still want to be an astronaut, but I think I’ve left my run a little late. I’d like to go into space though, that’s my ultimate goal.

How old were you when you decided to get into Rock ‘n’ Roll?

I don’t really call it Rock ‘n’ Roll, but I suppose it is. I’ve always liked music and probably since I was 13 I always wanted to be in a band. I was in my first band when I was 16, they were called The Cry Babies.

What’s the worst job you’ve had?

I worked in a chicken shop and I had to pull the guts out of chickens. That was pretty gross.
