The Motorola Dance Music Awards are on this Wednesday November 13 at the Metro. To help celebrate the auspicious occasion, we invited to of the nominees for best DJ - GT and last years winner, Kid Kenobi into the ring to punch it out. The form guide for the DMAs would have Kid Kenobi as an even favourite to take out Best DJ this year. Although no DJ has yet to win it two years in a row, it is hard to argue that it hasn't been Kid Kenobi's year - constant touring, loads of press, the cover of Ralph Style with his gal Chloe, and a successful MOS Clubbers Guide to Breaks compilation. Returning from an overseas tour, the Kid has just released his second Ministry Clubbers guide to Breaks 2 with MC Sureshock, the DMA co-host. The dark horse for the night is GT, still known as Groove Terminator to most radio announcers. With the backing of his record company following the release of his new album, "Electrifyin' Mojo", GT is an outside, and popular choice to take out the top prize. So, who's going to win? "I think Jesse (Kid Kenobi) will because he's pretty bloody good," offers GT. Kid Kenobi is quick to respond: "It cost a bomb to get him to say that!" A discussion of the relevance of the awards given the relative slump the dance music industry appears to be in, is refreshing refreshing in the honesty displayed by both Kenobi and GT. "To be honest, I'm quite surprised I've been acknowledged at all," says GT. "The dance music industry in this country is very insular and very cliquey. It's nice to have recognition from your peers." Kenobi holds a similar view: "As far as the DMAs go, there are still some people who cringe. At the end of the day, awards are awards and they are always going to be in shades of grey. Not everyone is going to agree with them." But GT still admits that it is good to be nominated. "It's reallyl nice and it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside," then adds an afterthought, "That's going to come out as sounding so sarcastic, I know it is!" From the Oscars, to the local bowling awards, acceptance speeches always seem to make the night that little bit more interesting. Here's a tip to the organisers of the Motorola Dance Music Awards. Don't give the DJ of the year award to GT if you want a clean, family show. "The last time I won something, I think I said 'fuck' about forty times. God Almighty. I had never won anything until that point, and I was just so stoked. I was always a bridesmaid and never a bride." Kid Kenobi, on the other hand, is coy about whether he has a speech prepared this year. When initially questioned, he answers, "no," followed by a laugh. "Are you sure", I probe. "It's a weird one, really" he says as his laughter turns a bit more nervous. Time for a change of tact. Did you have one prepared last year. "Yeh. I got up there and said, it's not cool, but I have one prepared." Then, surely this year you must have one? "Well, I think you always have to be prepared," says the Kid like any good boy scout. |
