I can not think of any other local groups that have the capacity to pull both hip dance kids and moshing rockers to a show. Sure, acts like the Prodigy do it, but there's not really too much of that crossover action going on here. DJ Billy Wizz played early and between groups, and I for one was totally not even in the room. I'm just not a dance kid. I've tried it, and if there's something visual happening then I guess I can get into it, but I find it hard to concentrate when there's nothing to look at. Sure, I could just dance, but I'm too bad at that particular pastime to be confident enough to do it in the presence of a whole pile of other people who have nothing else to look at than other dancers. Groove Terminator definitely gives those of us in need of visual stimulation something to watch. He's not a dance machine by any stretch of the imagination, his set consisted of live guitar and bass, screaming through a megaphone and lots of moshing. That's right, no cool and froody dance moves for young GT, just a whole lot of throwing himself around the stage like he's Link Meanie or something. And I don't know what drugs the bassist was on, but I think whatever they are should be handed out to sufferers of manic depression cos he sure seemed to be having a good time. About the only part of the set that indicated any dance tendencies whatsoever was the laser lights flashing in the background. Very upbeat, very loud, very rock and f*cking roll. sonic animation are groovin' motherf*ckers. As spastic as my moves are, it was hard to resist dancing to their catchy beats. It's really weird, watching the groovy audience members getting into all the songs, and the rock kids suddenly going off to the radio singles like "Theophilis Thister" and "Ecstacy". No surpises as to what my highlight of their set was - the furry oversized muppets that came running out to dance halfway through the set. I think something like that could be a new career path for me - it doesn't matter how badly you dance when you're inside a big fuzzy suit, in fact, it's almost expected that you move like an epileptic stiltwalker. Best dance moves of the night went to sonic's Rupert, who was cutting it up throughout the whole set. It must have been easy for him, right up on stage next to a fantastic percussionist. I tell you what, I think I may have to go check out some more clubs after this... I should make mention of the fact that beXta was playing late, but after a really, really long wait after sonic, and still no sign of her, I decided to head off. Yes, I'm a cad, bite me. |
