I would like to wholeheartedly recommend Seranna for a scholarship to attend the Vienna AIDS Conference 2010 and to present her paper on unfair and unsafe registration practices in the Northern Territory. I have known Seranna for two years as an extremely hard working peer educator who has the trust and rapport of her fellow sex workers, as well as being a very talented and forceful public speaker. She is very strongly motivated by a human rights approach and speaks with passion and humour about the issues faced by sex workers. As an up and coming activist from a remote area, Seranna would benefit greatly from attending this international conference and networking with experts and activists from all research fields and parts of the world. She is also a talented film-maker with short videos and a documentary on sex work in India already to her credit. She will make the most of her opportunities in Vienna by also filming and interviewing. Seranna’s attendance and experience at the conference will also benefit the rest of us here at NTAHC through raising our international profile, and when Seranna presents her observations, and hopefully her footage, back in Darwin. Thankyou very much for your kind attention and assistance for Seranna,
I'm always in awe of every single person involved in Scarlet, but this year I've been particularly inspired by Seranna. Amongst other things... - She has two Facebook profiles, where almost EVERY SINGLE DAY she posts links to sexual and reproductive health information. - She routinely discusses and demystifies sex work on those Facebook pages, patiently explaining the issues to her hundreds of non-sex working Facebook 'friends'. - She does a (weekly?) radio segment on sex and sexual health in NT, taking advantage of every opportunity to raise sex worker issues and address whore-stigma while she's at it. - She's been filming a doco that (fingers crossed) will take sex worker issues to a mainstream audience. - She's travelled all over the country and the world, at her own expense, to give sex workers the chance to have their voices heard in that doco. - She's commander in chief of a massive anti-registration revolt in NT - She's devised and run a number of fabulous sex worker community-building events this year - She performs at various mainstream events, photo shoots, rallies, etc giving a 'human face' to sex workers with her loud and proud alter-ego Jessie Abraham. - She is vivacious, warm, passionate and sparkly and she lights up the whole room when she walks into it. Jessie Abraham – for brining comedy into whore politics and whore politics into comedy, for being out and proud and most of all visible and loud at every possible event she get herself too, for being the supreme media whore that she is. |
