Gretel Killeen, host of Australia's dynamic Big Brother, could have been a contender, says Paddy Alan.

Gretel Killeen has clearly had a blast as host of Big Brother but I can't help thinking she'd also love to be a contestant. I think she'd even fancy herself as a winner - surely the male housemates would hesitate in nominating this fun and frolicking girl for eviction. And how clever she would be hiding things from the snooping eyes of Big Brother!

Take the night Andy was ceremoniously declared first evictee. You may have noticed that Gretel took a hefty and remarkably unflattering fall on the show's first eviction special. While Gretel was escorting Andy from the set, she took a dive on the runway leading out to the audience. Without a pause, she rose from the floor smiling, but a little red in the face. That much was visible to viewers - but what you didn't see was Gretel's injured finger, bleeding profusely after flesh had been ripped away on the edge of the set.

With copious amounts of blood flowing, Gretel soldiered on, using her clipboard to hide her injury from the spying Big Brother cameras. The producers had to stop the bleeding, but not the show. The arrival of the first commercial break saw them applying temporary bandages to Gretel's shredded finger. As the end credits rolled, she was rushed to hospital where she received a few stitches to her weeping wound.

Unknown to many before Big Brother, she has in fact appeared on other Network Ten shows. "Good News Week", and "Beauty And The Beast", but who is this probing, provocative prodigy? Gretel is a 38 year-old single mother, who is best known for her work as a voiceover artist for radio and TV commercials. She lives in a terrace house in Potts Point, with her children Zeke, 12 and Eppie, 9.

After a spell on the Australian debating team in her teens, Gretel dropped out of her law studies after only six weeks to perform as a stand-up comedian at the age of 20. JJJ radio tuned into Gretel's ability. She wrote and voiced comedy sketches. Last year she co-hosted a breakfast show on Sydney's 2DAYFM, managing to be fired four times in seven months. Gretel starred in a recent film, "The Magic Pudding", but no, you don't know that, because it was animated and Gretel voiced the role of a singing lizard. She has also written 18 books, including a series of kids' books that her children illustrated.
