The grill - with David Spade - by Julietta Jameson - Who magazine (18/06/01)

"Just Shoot Me" star David Spade has hit the big screen in "Joe Dirt", playing a mullet-mopped no-hoper with a heart of gold. In Australia promoting the movie, Spade, 36, let down his hair with Julietta Jameson.

Joe Dirt : A lovable loser?

He's not entirely a loser. He triumphs in the end. And when he does it's moving. At the premiere, Eminem was there and Kid Rock and Sean Penn - all my buddies - and I saw some tears.

From Sean Penn?

Not sure from him. But I saw some people crying.

So can nice guys - regardless of mullet hair-dos-really pull babes like Joe Dirt?

It's true. I mean, [young] guys go for pretty girls, but [young] girls go for anybody. [Guys] need to learn a lesson from that.

What do you think that means?

The girls are more together and smarter. They look beyond stuff. Then you get to my age and you get drawn to interesting people. Sometimes it's a trade off. But the more interesting people are, the more cool, the more interesting they look, you know?

Does being famous attract women?

Sure it does. I mean, looks-wise, I don't have girls busting to get across the bar to talk to me. I'm not that guy. But at least they go, "Oh, I've seen him on a talk show. He's either my type or he isn't."

Well, Australian women would probably like you for your ironic sense of humour. We understand that kind of fun here.

I've noticed that and that's good. Women do tend to like to laugh. But that also helps me with my TV show "Just Shoot Me", if people kind of dig Dennis, the character I play.

"Just Shoot Me" is going so well here.

I have so much fun hearing about it down here. It's a whole new thing. And this trip has been fun. It's fun to have people be excited. I didn't know if anybody would know me down here and so the ones who do are very sweet about it and I can handle that. I like people waving and saying, "Hey!" or stopping for a second. Unfortunately, they're a little ruder and meaner in California and that makes you scared to go out. I would hate to get to the Brad Pitt and Julia Roberts level. I've been with them when people go crazy and it's frightening. I don't want to sacrifice my normal, everyday stupid life and let people run it.

Have people really been mean to you in California?

Oh, yeah. You get all cocky because you think people know you. But you forget they don't always like you. They just know you.

Finally, David, your movie, "Joe Dirt", has a hilarious 1970s soundtrack. Is there any '70s song that's so awful you wouldn't like to put in a movie?

Olivia's "I Honestly Love You."

That's our Livvy!

I know it's your Livvy, baby. I know your Livvy, your Kylie, the whole thing. However [breaks into song], "If we both were born, in another place and time..." Actually, it's so sappy, I probably would use it.
